Each August, a remarkable event transforms the town of Neustadt, Ontario. Hundreds of dedicated runners, spanning decades of ages, participate in the Colleen Lantz Memorial Run 4 Youth. The race day is a sight to behold with runners, volunteers, service clubs and townspeople all participating in support of this amazing effort. Each year, the Race Committee selects a Community Youth Organization as the recipient for pledges and donations raised by this event.
The South Grey Bruce Youth Literacy Council is grateful to have been considered as the 2010 Run 4 Youth sponsored organization and has received the generous donation of $8,000. from race proceeds. These funds will directly support our Volunteer Tutor Program which supports youth who are struggling with their learning. We are most thankful to Alecia Lantz, Race Director and her wonderful core committee who work throughout the year on this mammoth project. As well we must thank the kind sponsors – Gay Lea, New Life Mills Employee Association, TD Bank, Runners’ Den, and BDO, as well as the many generous donors who pledged in support of the runners. The energy of the volunteers was phenomenal and only matched by the fine weather of the Race Day.
This entire effort, commemorating Colleen Lantz and her devotion to youth and fitness is testimony to the remarkable magic of community. In all, I can only quote Margaret Mead “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever does”.
We receive invaluable support for our work from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, United Way of Bruce Grey, ING Canada, Meridian Credit Union, Energizer Canada, Rotary Children’s Fund, as well as many local businesses, community service groups, and private donors. We also have affiliations and partnerships with other community organizations, including the QUILL Learning Network, The Ontario Literacy Coalition, and Youth Roots.
